Human Hair or Synthetic? The Honest Comparison
The short answer: human hair looks more natural, can be styled and coloured and lasts longer with good care, but costs more and needs more attention. Synthetic hair is cheaper, keeps its shape by itself and is easier to look after, but has a characteristic shine and tolerates no heat. For a hair system worn daily that should catch nobody’s eye, there is practically no way around human hair. That is why we work exclusively with human hair, but there are situations in which synthetic is the more sensible choice.
The direct comparison
| Human hair | Synthetic hair | |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | natural, individual structure | uniform, often slightly shiny |
| Styling | blow-drying, straightening, curling possible | the shape is fixed, no heat |
| Colouring | possible | not possible |
| Durability | several months with good care | shorter, tangles faster |
| Care | needs shampoo, conditioner, a routine | wash, dry, done |
| Price | higher | considerably cheaper |
Why we only work with human hair
The decisive point is not durability but light. Synthetic fibres reflect more uniformly than human hair, which is why they look artificial especially in sunlight or under a flash. That is exactly the moment a hair system stands out.
On top of that, human hair can be colour matched to your own hair including the grey proportion, and a hairdresser can cut it in like grown hair. Both are only possible to a limited extent with synthetic.
Honestly: for a system worn every day that should not stand out at the office, at sport or over dinner with friends, that is not a matter of taste but a necessity. More on that under can you tell a hair system.
When synthetic hair makes sense
We say it openly, even though we do not offer it:
- For very short wear, for a single occasion for instance
- On a very tight budget, when you want to try the subject out first
- When care is not an option, synthetic keeps its shape without any input
In those cases synthetic is the sensible choice. But anyone wanting to wear it daily will switch after a few months, and will then have paid twice.
The mixed form
There are systems made from blended fibres, cheaper than pure human hair and less shiny than pure synthetic. They are a compromise in both directions. We do not work with them, because in our experience the difference in the result is too clear.
Not all human hair is equal
Within human hair too there are large differences in quality. Origin, processing and whether the cuticle layer is intact decide shine and lifespan. A cheap human hair system can look worse than a good blended-fibre product.
How you recognise quality: the hair should feel like your own, lie in one direction and not crackle when combed. You can check that yourself at the consultation.
Care makes the difference
Human hair in a system is not supplied by the body. What you do not give it, it does not have, which is why care decides more about lifespan than the purchase price. The complete routine is under cleaning and caring for a hair system.
Common questions
Can I colour human hair in a system?
In principle yes, but carefully, because system hair does not regenerate. Talk to us beforehand.
Can you really tell synthetic hair?
With short hairstyles and poor light, often not. In sunlight, under a flash or from close up, usually yes.
Is human hair automatically better?
No. Badly processed human hair can disappoint. Quality beats material type.
What do you use?
Exclusively human hair, in all three systems. The comparison of the bases is under skin, lace or mono.
When synthetic hair is still worth it
Anyone wearing a hair system daily who wants nobody to notice needs human hair. Synthetic has its place for short wear or a very tight budget, but as a permanent solution it usually leads to a second purchase.
You judge that best with both in your hand. In the free first consultation you see our human hair systems from close up.
