Skin, Lace or Mono? The Base Types Compared
The short answer: the base is the carrier the human hair is knotted onto, and it decides more about your daily life than the hair itself. Skin is the most invisible and the easiest to change, but also the most delicate. Lace is the most breathable and the best choice for sport and heat, but asks for a little more care. Monofilament lasts longest and is the easiest to look after, but sits marginally thicker. There is no best system, only one that fits your life.
Why the base matters more than the hair
In the first consultation almost everyone asks about the hair: colour, length, density. Understandable, but that is the part that is easiest to adjust. What actually decides your satisfaction is the base. It determines how invisible the hairline looks, how often you have to change, how it feels in the heat and how long your system lasts. That is why we deliberately carry only three base types instead of an unmanageable catalogue.
The direct comparison
| Skin | Lace | Monofilament | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | ultra-thin film (0.03 to 0.08 mm) | fine mesh | denser fine weave |
| Invisibility | best | very good | good |
| Breathability | low | best | medium |
| Durability | shortest | medium | longest |
| Care effort | easy to clean | most demanding | most straightforward |
| Change rhythm | individual | individual | individual |
| Ideal for | short hairstyles, starting out | sport, heat, sweating | everyday life, self-change |
| With us | VIENNA, 599 € | HOLLYWOOD, 689 € | SYDNEY, 689 € |
All three are human hair, custom made and colour matched against your own hair. Details on each system are under hair systems.
Skin: when nobody may notice a thing
The skin base is an ultra-thin film that visually merges with the scalp. It creates the most invisible transition there is, even from 10 centimetres away. Cleaning it could not be simpler: a smooth surface, adhesive residue comes off quickly. Honestly: what makes it so invisible also makes it delicate. A 0.05 mm film forgives no rough handling, and it barely breathes, which anyone who sweats heavily will notice. The change rhythm is usually the shortest as well. For you if: you wear your hair short, want maximum naturalness at the hairline, or are wearing a system for the first time.
Lace: when your head has to work
Lace is a fine mesh. Air circulates, sweat evaporates, nothing builds up under the system. For the gym, a run, the sauna or a Viennese midsummer that is the most noticeable difference there is. The hairline also looks very natural with lace, because every hair is knotted individually through the mesh. Honestly: lace demands the most patience when changing. Adhesive residue sits in the weave, cleaning takes longer, and rough pulling punishes you immediately. Anyone changing it themselves should bring some experience. For you if: you do intensive sport regularly, sweat heavily, or want the best scalp climate.
Monofilament: when you rarely want to think about it
One note on this: at Hairsystems Vienna we carry the SYDNEY with a French lace base and a wide polyurethane edge instead of a monofilament base. It covers the same need, robust and low maintenance, and holds particularly firmly through the closed bonding surface along the edge.
Mono is the most robust of the three. The denser weave lasts longer, forgives more and is the least complicated to change. Anyone who wants to use their system as long as possible and does not want to walk on eggshells during a self-change is in the right place here. Honestly: mono sits marginally thicker than skin. With very short hairstyles we therefore often recommend VIENNA. The difference is small, but visible with a buzz cut. For you if: durability and easy care come before everything else, or you are starting out with self-changing.
How we advise in the studio
We basically ask four questions:
- How short do you wear your hair? The shorter, the more likely skin.
- How much do you sweat? A lot of sport or heavy sweating: lace.
- How much time do you want to put into care? Little: mono.
- Do you change it yourself or in the studio? Beginners at self-changing are most relaxed with mono.
The answers often contradict each other, and then it is a matter of weighing things up. That is exactly what the consultation is for, and why all three bases are there to handle.
Can I switch later?
Yes, at any time. You are not tied to any base, there are no contracts and no minimum term. Many of our customers start with skin and switch to lace after a year because they do more sport, or the other way round to mono because they prefer the longer rhythm.
Common questions
Which base lasts longest? Monofilament, followed by lace. Skin is the shortest lived, and in return the most invisible. Which base is the most invisible? Skin. The difference from lace is small in everyday life though, and the quality of the fitting is what really decides. More on that: can you tell a hair system. Which base suits a sensitive scalp? Usually lace, because the skin underneath can breathe. The adhesive matters just as much, and we discuss that individually. What does the difference cost? VIENNA (skin) costs 599 €, HOLLYWOOD (lace) and SYDNEY (French Lace) 689 € each, final prices including VAT and the complete fitting. All running costs are under what does a hair system cost. Can I have several systems at once? Yes, and many people do: one is worn, one is prepared. That shortens the change day considerably and extends the life of both systems.
Which base suits which daily life
Skin for invisibility, lace for sweating, mono for durability, that is the rough summary. Which base is right for you depends less on the technology than on your daily life. You answer that most honestly with all three bases in your hand. In the free first consultation they are on the table, 30 to 60 minutes, discreet, without sales pressure.
