Changing a Hair System Yourself: A Studio Guide

The short answer: changing a hair system yourself takes around 45 to 60 minutes once you have some practice and saves you 40 to 50 euros a month depending on your rhythm. The sequence is always the same: remove, clean the scalp, clean the system, dry, re-bond. What matters is not speed but care, above all when degreasing the skin. Skip that and you will not get through three weeks.

Is changing it yourself even worth it?

Let us calculate honestly. Anyone having every change done in the studio pays 105 € with us for the full service. Anyone changing it themselves pays only for materials: adhesive, tapes, cleaners. Over a year that is a difference of several hundred euros depending on the rhythm. In exchange you invest time: 90 minutes and some nerve the first few times, later about an hour. Many of our customers take a middle road, changing it themselves in between and booking the full service in the studio every few weeks for a cut and a thorough check. Honestly: not everyone wants this. If the thought of standing in the bathroom with remover and adhesive stresses you, the studio service is the better choice. That is not a question of skill but of preference.

What you need

What What for
Remover loosens adhesive and tapes from the scalp
System cleaner removes adhesive residue from the base
Skin cleaner cleans and degreases the scalp
Adhesive or tape the new bond
Brush or sponge for an even application
Hair clips keep the top hair out of the way
Tail comb parting and work at the hairline

You will find all of it in our shop. We only stock what we use in the studio ourselves every day.

Step by step

1. Prepare (5 minutes)

Lay everything out on a towel within reach. Good light, ideally a mirror plus a hand mirror for the back of the head. Part the top hair with clips so you can reach the bonding zones.

2. Remove (10 minutes)

Apply remover generously at the edge and let it work. The system comes away by itself once the remover has run underneath. Never pull, never peel it off the scalp dry. Work slowly from one side to the other. The most common mistake we see: impatience. Anyone who pulls instead of waiting irritates the skin and strains the base. The minutes you save you pay for with redness and a system that wears out faster.

3. Clean the system (10 minutes)

Lay the removed system on a towel. Apply system cleaner to the adhesive residue, let it work briefly and push the residue off carefully with ordinary cotton wool, do not scrape. The knotting is more delicate than it looks. Then wash the system and let it dry completely. Residual moisture in the base is one of the most common reasons tapes let go early.

4. Clean and degrease the scalp (10 minutes)

The most important step, and the one most often rushed. First remove adhesive residue with the system cleaner, then clean and degrease the scalp with the skin cleaner and let it dry completely. Anyone using an exfoliant regularly also removes dead skin cells, which noticeably improves the hold. A rule from the studio: the durability of your bond is decided here, not by the adhesive.

5. Re-bond (15 minutes)

Depending on the system, either apply tapes or put on liquid adhesive in thin layers. With liquid adhesive, let each layer flash off until it turns clear, then the next. Two or three thin layers hold better than one thick one. Place the system at the back first, then work forward, the front last, without tension on the material. That is how you avoid the famous travelling hairline.

6. Press down and style (10 minutes)

Press the edges down well, give it a few minutes to settle, then release the top hair, comb it through and style. Done.

The five most common mistakes

  1. Pulled too early. Remover needs time. Always.
  2. Skin not degreased. Costs you one to two weeks of durability.
  3. Bonded while the system was still damp. The bond comes loose early.
  4. Too much adhesive. It does not hold better, but it makes the next cleaning a misery.
  5. Front put under tension. The transition becomes visible.

How often is a change needed?

That depends on the base, your skin and the adhesive. As a rough guide, at your own rhythm, which for our customers is usually between 10 days and 4 weeks. Wearing the bond too long risks a visible hairline and irritates the skin. More on that in our article can you tell a hair system.

Common questions

How long does a self-change really take? The first time 90 minutes or more. After three or four goes you are at about an hour. Can I damage anything? Most likely the base, by scraping while cleaning or pulling while removing. Both avoidable if you allow yourself the time. Do I need help for the back of my head? Most people manage alone with a hand mirror. A second person is pleasant the first time but not necessary. What does a self-change cost me per month? Materials only. The full calculation including a comparison with the studio service is under what does a hair system cost. Will I be shown how? Yes. The self-change training is included in the system price with us. We do the first change together before you try it alone.

When changing it yourself works

Changing it yourself is no magic trick, but it is not something to do on the side either. Anyone who takes an hour, degreases carefully and stays patient while removing gets the same result as in the studio, at the price of materials. And if you are unsure, show us at your next appointment how you do it. We will look it over and tell you honestly where you are making life harder than necessary. Book your free consultation →
