Hair System Adhesives Compared: Tape or Liquid?
The short answer: tapes are simpler to apply, cleaner at the change and the better choice for beginners. Liquid adhesive gives the most invisible transition but demands practice. The strongest solution is usually the combination: matte tape at the visible front, strongly adhesive tape or liquid adhesive in the area behind it. That is how we bond most often in the studio.
The three types of bonding
| Tape | Liquid adhesive | Combination | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application | simple, forgives mistakes | needs practice | medium |
| Visibility at the front | very good (matte) to good | the most invisible | very good |
| Hold | every 7 days to 4 weeks | every 7 days to 4 weeks | longest |
| Effort at the change | quick, clean | cleaning takes longer | medium |
| For whom | beginners, self-changers | advanced, short hairstyles | most of our customers |
Tapes: the standard for everyday use
Double-sided adhesive strips are the workhorse: stick them on, peel off the backing, place the system. They forgive small mistakes and come off cleanly at the change.
The differences are in the detail:
- Extenda Bond Plus: long-term tape with ventilation holes, up to four weeks. Our standard at the first fitting.
- Blue Minis: small, curved strips for contours and quick touch-ups.
- No Shine Tape: matte, reflects no light, and therefore first choice for the visible front. Shorter hold in exchange.
- Ultra Hold Minis: maximum adhesion for anyone who wants peace between changes.
Honestly: there is no tape that does everything. Maximum adhesion and maximum invisibility rule each other out. Hence the zone solution.
Liquid adhesive: for a transition without an edge
Liquid adhesive is applied in thin layers directly onto the skin. The result is a transition without any edge at all, particularly strong in combination with a skin base like our VIENNA system.
The technique decides: two or three thin layers, letting each flash off until it turns clear. Apply one thick layer and you get neither better hold nor a clean result, only sticky edges.
Honestly: the first few times it goes wrong. That is normal. We show you the technique in the self-change training, and after that it is routine. Anyone who does not want to practise is better off with tapes.
Sport and sweating: the special case
If your head works regularly, the normal bond is the weak point. For that there is Max Hold Sport: it forms a resilient layer between skin and adhesive and holds up under sweat and high humidity too.
Combined with a breathable lace base, that is our clear recommendation for anyone doing intensive sport. More on that: hair systems and swimming.
What really determines the hold
The most common misconception: my adhesive does not hold. In most cases it is not the adhesive.
Three factors weigh more than the choice of product:
- Degreasing the skin. By far the most important point. A film of oil prevents adhesion no matter how strong the product.
- Dryness. Residual moisture in the skin or the base loosens tapes early.
- Your skin type. Anyone who sweats heavily or has oily skin will never reach the same intervals as someone with a dry scalp. That is not a question of application but of biology.
And removing it?
Just as important as bonding. Loosen with system remover, never pull it off dry. Then remove residue from the skin with skin cleaner and from the base with system cleaner.
A studio rule: anyone who cuts corners when removing pays at the next bonding, with worse hold and irritated skin.
Common questions
Which adhesive holds longest?
Among the tapes the ultra hold family, among the liquid adhesives the sport versions. Realistically all of them are every 7 days to 4 weeks, depending on skin, sweat and preparation.
Which adhesive is the most invisible at the hairline?
Liquid adhesive, closely followed by matte no shine tape. Shiny standard tapes do not belong at the front.
Can I use tape and liquid adhesive at the same time?
Yes, and it is the most common solution in the studio. Each zone gets what it needs.
What should I do about skin irritation?
Change adhesive and find the cause. It is often down to residue that was not removed thoroughly, not to the product itself. Talk to us before you put up with it.
Which adhesive for beginners?
Tapes. They forgive dosing mistakes and come off cleanly.
Which adhesive for whom
There is no best adhesive, there is the right one for your skin, your base and your daily life. Most of our customers do best with a combination: invisible at the front, strong behind.
If you are unsure which combination suits you, ask us before you order. A short message saves you more than any product trial.
