When health insurance contributes

In Austria, statutory health insurance can contribute to hair replacement, but only under specific conditions. Hereditary hair loss is not one of them.

What is covered

Hair loss caused by illness or its treatment. Alopecia areata, totalis and universalis, hair loss after chemotherapy or radiation, and certain scalp conditions. A medical prescription for hair replacement is required, issued by your GP, dermatologist or oncologist.

What is not covered

Hereditary hair loss, which is what affects most men. Insurers treat it as cosmetic, not medical, and we tell you that before you fill in any forms.

How the process works

First, get the prescription from your doctor, ideally before the purchase. Second, consultation and fitting with us; you receive a proper invoice with all the details insurers need. Third, submit prescription and invoice to your insurer, which with ÖGK and the other carriers now works online. Fourth, the contribution is paid to you as a reimbursement.

How much is reimbursed

The amount differs between insurers and is set by each carrier. We cannot promise a figure. Ask your insurer before your appointment what they contribute for hair replacement.

What we can do

We issue the invoice in the form insurers expect and help you with the paperwork. We cannot influence the decision itself.
